1968: MLK is Assassinated  

On April 4th of 1968, James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. as he stood on the balcony outside of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee.

The murder of the Civil Rights leader came less than a day after he had delivered his rousing "mountaintop" speech. In the coming days, the outrage over King's assassination sparked a wave of protests and rioting in America's inner cities.
